Project summary

Pursuing a ban on the sale of commercially farmed fur in Washington and Massachusetts.

What are this project's goals? How will you achieve them?

The projects goals are to introduce, advocate for and ultimately pass legislation that will prohibit the sale of fur within the states of Washington and Massachusetts. This aims to reduce demand for fur from domestic and international factory farms, each of which have tens of thousands of animals annually. We will achieve that by presenting legislators with new and compelling evidence regarding the carbon emissions and other pollution related to fur that stands out amongst other textiles. Using the same principles that passed the Octopus farming ban, we can use sustainability and environmental protection arguments to support the bill versus relying on ethics alone.

How will this funding be used?

Funding will be used to research, design fact sheets, write compelling lobbying communications, present evidence to legislators, write and deliver testimonials, train and coordinate with other interested organizations, organize corporate outreach demonstrations, create email and letter campaigns for corporate outreach, host in-person events to spread public awareness and gather petition signatures, create informative social media, and to write and release press.

Who is on your team? What's your track record on similar projects?

Amanda Fox - Executive Director, Joshua Diamond - Legislative Affairs and Campaigns Organizer, and Amanda Chavira - Campaigns Specialist. In 2024, we passed the Octopus Farming Ban in Washington and then assisted with passing the same in California. We also passed a bill to ban the sale of cosmetics tested on animals in Washington. We have also successfully introduced multiple bills in the last few years covering the circus and other animal issues.

What are the most likely causes and outcomes if this project fails?

If the bill does not pass this year it will be carried over to next session. In that time we can research and advocate for introduction in other states.

How much money have you raised in the last 12 months, and from where?

$40,000 Craigslist Charitable Fund

$40,000 Greenbaum Foundation
