Project summary

Brigada Animal México is an independent anti-speciesist collective that seeks to improve the lives and dignity of animals of different species throughout Mexico through pedagogical training, conversation, artistic creation, national strategic campaigns, performances, and protests.

Examples of our work include:

-Nationwide campaigns against speciesist companies/events.

-Our podcast with hundreds of episodes.

-Nationwide tours where we give trainings for activists.

-Daily educational infographics.

-Ecological investigations made in situ.

What are this project's goals? How will you achieve them?

Our biggest goals are:

  • We aim to build and live in a world where everyone practices the ethics of veganism.

  • We aspire to abolish speciesism and all forms of oppression for all people, which includes non-human animals, on the planet.

  • We seek to share tools, strategies, and tactics through which all activists can develop and improve the activism they already do.

To that end, we create structures and tools for solidarity and effective activism, for the development of educational campaigns, documentation, outreach, journalism on issues of ethical interest about animals, training workshops for animal liberation activists, and fundraising for rescued animals, among other activities. We focus on every aspect of veganism, every non-human animal affected by speciesism, the environmental cost of current agricultural systems, and how a non-vegan diet affects the human body.

How will this funding be used?

Our current fundraising goal will cover the travel costs for our appearance at the “Encuentro por los Animales” conference, which is the biggest expo and conference for vegan activism in Latin America. It will also cover part of our earlier internet expenses for the year and use what’s leftover for some advertisement for our posts.

Who is on your team? What's your track record on similar projects?

Our current team is comprised of seven people:

-Paola (Poli) Sotomayor Ibarra - founder

-Luis David (Ufo) Diego Pérez Sandoval

-Azul Herrera Martinez Vara

-América Junnuen Lira Torres

-Gabriela Valdez Miranda

-Rosa Ángela Badillo Navarrete

-Abigail Galeana Ortiz

We are a horizontal organization, we have no hierarchy and our decisions are made unanimously. We have different expertises and all work in different measures in all of our projects. We have some members who have been in the team since its inception in 2017, and some that are recent arrivals, but we all have a background in activism, communication, research and pedagogy. Our team is composed of pedagogues, philosophers, veterinarians, artists, graphic designers, communication specialists, sociologists, sustainability specialists, lecturers, and workshop participants from a wide range of professions, and creative and activist personalities.

What are the most likely causes and outcomes if this project fails?

We have essentially worked without funding for the last two years, relying on small (less than $1000) and scarce donations. This has caused a lot of burnout within the group and for some members to leave the team. If we don’t receive funding soon, we will have to put the project on pause or greatly decrease our work until we receive funding. We have a lot of projects going on at once, which means that a lot of volunteers are working full-time hours without any funding and it is quickly becoming unsustainable.

What other funding are you or your project getting?

We received a $1000 grant from A Well Fed World and an anonymous $100 donation this year.
