I study the cultural evolution of cognitive technologies: techniques, beliefs, and artifacts that humans develop to interface with their minds. My research focuses on the structure of altered states of consciousness across cultures. Alongside my cross-cultural projects, I conduct fieldwork in Lesotho on the indigenous use of native psilocybin mushrooms -- as far as anyone knows, psilocybin use in Lesotho is the first documented case of indigenous psychedelic traditions outside of the Americas.
