AI Understanding (aiunderstanding.org) is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit publishing free plain-language AI education — 1000+ guides, no paywall, no account, in 40 languages, accessibility-first. This project produces 60 short-form video explainers (2–4 minutes each) on catastrophic AI risks — AGI scenarios, the control problem, misuse risks, power concentration, AI governance — each scripted from expert-reviewed plain-language content and produced in 40 languages via AI-assisted translation and voiceover with human review. All videos free forever, open-licensed, distributed on the platforms where the public actually learns (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram).
Goal: give ordinary people everywhere — not just the technical elite — a rigorous, jargon-free understanding of AI's catastrophic risks, in the medium and languages they actually use. Short-form video reaches audiences that never read long guides, especially younger and non-English-speaking audiences. How: (1) finalize 60 scripts adapted from AI safety literature, reviewed by domain experts; (2) produce videos using an AI-assisted pipeline — script simplification, translation into 40 languages, AI voiceover with human QA, motion-graphics templates; (3) publish across platforms with localized titles/descriptions; (4) track reach and comprehension (views, completion rates, quiz-linked CTAs). Success: 60 videos × 40 languages published within 9 months; 1M+ cumulative views; open-licensed template pack other safety communicators can reuse.
$25,000 total: video producer/editor (contract) $10,000; scriptwriter (AI safety background) $6,000; translation QA reviewers (40 languages, sampled review) $4,000; motion-graphics templates & accessibility (captions) $3,000; tools, hosting & distribution $2,000.
Alex Gonzalez — Founder, CEO & President, AI Understanding; project lead (https://aiunderstanding.org). Board: Angelica Martinez, Roberto Gonzalez. Track record: as a lean founder-led nonprofit, AI Understanding has published 1000+ plain-language AI guides, a daily quiz, an AI glossary, and ongoing AI news coverage — all free, in 40 languages — using an AI-assisted editorial pipeline (LLM-assisted drafting, plain-language simplification, translation workflows with human review). This project extends that proven pipeline from text to video. Contractors (producer, writer, reviewers) hired on funding.
Most likely failure: videos don't find an audience (algorithmic distribution is uncertain) — outcome: a smaller-than-hoped audience, but all 60 videos × 40 languages remain published as a free open-licensed library others can build on. Secondary risk: translation quality issues in lower-resource languages — mitigated by sampled human QA and community correction. Funds are spent on production regardless, so the public-good library exists even in the failure case.
